We have all the latest breaking news and headlines in South Africa on Wednesday 9 December, right here, when you need it the most.
At the halfway point in the week, things have warmed up nicely. The net is closing in once again on those who were steeped in corruption at every level of government. On Tuesday 8 December, the Asset Forfeiture Unit froze R23-million worth of assets belonging to the office of the KwaZulu-Natal Premier and staff.
TODAY’S LATEST NEWS IN SOUTH AFRICA, Wednesday 9 December
Meanwhile, the ruling party is still dancing around the issue of what to do with corruption-accused members in their ranks. Seems a straight-forward answer, but you’ll be surprised at the way the ANC has contorted itself over this one.
FIRST WESTERN COUNTRY TO START VACCINATING PROGRAMME
Margaret Keenan, a 90-year-old grandmother from Britain, has become the first person in the world to receive the Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine outside of a trial following its rapid clinical approval.
Keenan received the jab at her local hospital in Coventry, central England, on Tuesday morning, a week before she turns 91.
“It’s the best early birthday present I could wish for because it means I can finally look forward to spending time with my family and friends in the New Year after being on my own for most of the year.”
“I feel so privileged to be the first person vaccinated against Covid-19,” Keenan added.
It was the first of 800,000 doses of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine that will be dispensed in the coming weeks, the BBC reported.
KZN PREMIER’S OFFICE STAFF IN HOT WATER
The Asset Forfeiture Unit of the NPA (AFU) in KwaZulu-Natal, restrained several immovable properties and vehicles belonging to the Chief Financial Officer from the KZN Premier’s office in KwaZulu Natal, Ziphathie Mboneni Cibane, his co-accused and their entities.
According to NPA National spokesperson Sipho Ngwema, the move follows an order granted by the High Court of South Africa: Kwazulu-Natal Division, against the accused persons in the criminal matter that is currently before the Specialised Commercial Crimes Court.
In July 2020, Cibane and three other KZN Premier’s office staff members, Nomusa Zakwe, Thobelani Makhathini and Sithembiso Msomi appeared in the Durban Specialised Commercial Crimes Court along with Gugu Kheswa of Phumalanga Communications. They were charged with tender fraud and corruption.
In October 2020, they were joined by more accused; Pamela Hlongwa, Ashley Rose, Ntombimpela Mabel Majozi and Sybil Mataung along with their entities; Roren Engineering, Nto’s Catering CC, I Dot Q, Set Apart Group, Isidleke Enterprises Pty Ltd and Inala Business Consortium.
The state’s case is that the KZN Premier’s office staff, who worked in the Supply Chain Management Section, colluded and unlawfully co-operated with these service providers to manipulate the tender process.
Ace Magashule to present himself at Integrity Commission
President Cyril Ramaphosa, on Tuesday 8 December, confirmed that African National Congress (ANC) Secretary-General Ace Magashule would submit himself to the party’s integrity commission on Saturday 12 December.
Ramaphosa delivered the news while summing up the events of the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting which took place from Sunday to Tuesday.
Ramaphosa said officials will finalise the guidelines that will be applied in instances where members of the organisation are formally charged with, convicted of or reported to be involved in corruption or other serious crimes.
The Hawks in the Free State issued Magashule with a warrant of arrest early last month in relation to the controversial R255 million Free State asbestos contract. It is alleged that dodgy dealings took place all while Magashule served as the province’s premier. Magashule made a court appearance at the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court shortly after the warrant was issued.
Charlize Theron gives ‘lesbian Die Hard’ reboot concept thumbs up
The suggestion of a Die Hard remake in which South Africa’s own Charlize Theron “goes on a rampage to save her wife” is pretty outrageous and could never work, we’re sure of it.
But then, what if it… could it possibly…?
Theron herself seems fairly enticed by the idea – which was offered by a Twitter user on Tuesday – and asked where she can sign up and get this thing going.
Twitter user Francis O said that while “lesbian Christmas rom-coms are all well and good”, what she “REALLY wants” is a “Die Hard where Charlize Theron goes on a rampage to save her wife”.
She might not have expected the response to be as emphatically positive, and she even got the nod from the Monster, Bombshell, and Mad Max: Fury Road star herself.
